Happy 2021 to all! Big thank you for hanging out and being awesome for the first two-ish months of the site. It's been fun so far, looking forwards to a lot this year! If you haven't seen, after a delay, the last day of the advent can be claimed now (here). You have three choices for your last advent prize including a second chance at a creature pass. That's right we have creatures coming to Aesseldar now! Be sure to check the announcement for any rule clarifications if you're interested. Last big bit of news we do have our light layout "in the mist" ready to be used. There will still be tweaks and color changes coming in the next week or so by the fantastic dusk so don't be afraid if things look a little different.

Congratulations to Zay for winning the pride raffle with Runar! Welcome our new pride, Adamo Autumna! Don't forget to keep posting in the advent to claim your awesome prizes, and within the next few days you'll see some additional posts cropping up in the ooc areas. We'd love some feedback on the site and will be adding an area for feedback and suggestions. We will also be adding a thread to post all your open threads. Another fantastic surprise is that Koafox (some of you may know her as Miranda from other sites) has said we are welcome to use their table switcher plugin. As soon as I get the files we will be integrating that into the site for everyone to enjoy!

TWO news posts back to back my oh my stuff must be brewing! We wanted to let everyone know that the third pride slot has opened. Unlike the other slots we wanted to give everyone a chance to go for it as well, so we'll be raffling it! In order to enter the raffle please DM an admin or the Eoin account with your OOC and which character you'd like to enter the raffle with. The only requirement that has to be met is that the character must be 2 years of age or older (meaning that number of posts and feathers doesn't matter). So get your entries in, the more the merrier as we head into the new year! The other exciting news is that our neutral/lighter colored layout will be out by the end of the year, thanks to the lovely dusk!

Thank you so much everyone for a fantastic first month opening. We wanted to thank you all and let you know that we've decided to extend the grand opening bonuses for one more week, so you can bring in your first three characters free through 12/11! In other news our first contests have started and we couldn't be more excited! You may participate in the following, if you haven't already partaken: Advent Calendar, Superlatives, Advertising Contest, OTMs, and the Writing Contests. We'll be releasing another update soon with some super fun surprises, but some of Eoin's events have drawn to an end and it appears some new boards may start popping up! Expect to see more of Eoin, as well as some adjustment to the event threads, for some of the future boards as well!

As we bring another week to close we'd like to welcome everyone to participate in our first contest! The Advertising contest is up and provides some really great rewards, as well as participation rewards! Coming soon are the first set of OTMs and superlatives, a writing contest, a sneak peak at our more refined skills system, and a few other small updates. Happy weekend everyone!

Thank you everyone for having joined us so far for our site opening and help us grow our community. We have had so many wonderful suggestions, and while we are processing some things and working on the skills, we wanted to let you all know that the OTMs and superlatives are coming! Keep an eye out soon for those. Also it appears that Eoin has been wandering around Aesseldar and may be up to no good... best get checking on his apperances for some good old fashion fun, and maybe even a sweet surprise!

Welcome everyone to the grand opening of Aesseldar! We are excited to open our doors and build a community with all of you. As we being our journey together we would love you all to read through the grand opening thread, and remember that while we're transitioning into the start of this, we still have a few fantastic surprises coming. Our skill system is underway and we hope to have that out by the end of November, we would also love to have you all in the Discord with us and welcome any and all suggestions and feedback to help us improve the site! We have a number of things still to come, including a lighter colored layout, accessories in the shop, and would love to remind everyone that the top right series of three vertical dashes will open up the sidebar. In order to reference what IC month it is you will find the calendar link in the sidebar. Happy posting!

12/15/2020 Eoin
With three new terrains open and a third pride staking a claim once more, our mischievous deity Eoin appears to be up to no good again. The quake that cracked open the mountain and closed it once more was felt around the lands, and three new terrains popped open. Tryphosa Shore now has an Atoll sub-board, and there is a Desert and a Rift board. Several more will be coming... but first Eoin will make an impression.

11/17/2020 Eoin
The rainforest trembles, as if fighting back against those who dare to occupy it. The lands of Aesseldar are still only half-tamed, unfettered and unwilling to give way to any aspiring King, any growing empire. And just as quick as King Barnabas came to lay claim to it did it begin to push back, forcing his fledgling pride out with an unforgiving downpour, and a bitter resentment of the creatures that dwell within. With one pride felled, it leaves the opportunity for another to rise from the ashes.

11/4/2020 Eoin
It happened on a hot, humid night. No one there to witness it. Somewhere, surely, it could be heard. The start of a crack. The sound vibrating from mountain top to valley dips. It was a long and dreadful noise. Somewhere in the mountains, somehow, one of the peaks had collapsed. An impassible tower of sharpened points- gone. Snow, with the hidden rocks from the destruction, slid down the slopes that were formed by ages. A wave of white forced outward to cover all below. At first it is still much too dangerous to traverse. But with time the new ground settles and with it comes- a pass. On the other side awaits a land untouched by the curious paws. The lands of Aesseldar have been revealved and somewhere down below three pridelands sit empty, awaiting for eager travelers to start staking their claims. Please refer to the grand opening announcement for information on how to claim a pride slot and fully customize it, since there are some grand opening bonuses or exceptions that are not referenced in the guidebook! We would also love to let everyone know that any official in-character news that gets posted in this "in-character" section of the layout is going to be considered common knowledge for any character in-game. Consider it like an in-character bulletin board! We will keep it updated with relevant and applicable information and hope it helps inspire your plots.

Spring Y11
With spring the clouds begin to disperse and the warmer weather begins and new life blooms. With new lands having been discovered there is a plethora of places for the lions to explore and yet somehow that mischievous site deity never seems to stop bringing the surprises, some of which include occasional inclement weathers. Temps varying between 45°-80°F (7°-27°C).

Character Creation

basics
Character creation is fairly loose on the site, we have few limitations and would love for everyone to express their creativity with their characters. That being said, please familiarize yourself with the details on this page prior to creating a character, if you have any questions if something not listed here is or isn't allowed you can always post in the forum or in the help center in the discord. While we encourage everyone to have fun and try not to limit creativity for characters, it is also appreciated if they not be too visually overwhelming to allow accessibility for all players. We may reject or ask you to modify a design if it is problematic or potentially triggering to conditions which may result in headaches, eye strain, etc.

Every character needs to have their own account, with the name properly capitalized. Characters of any gender, gender identity, or even intersex may join the site, there are no limitations on this. Even in the traditional male/female roles typical to these types of sites, such as claiming rights are to be dictated by the founders of the pride and not by admins, the only exception being that adult males cannot be claimed. For more information on intersex characters and litters please see the breeding page. Aesseldar does employ some dimorphism (designated as male/female) between characters when it comes to sizes, details are below and you will need to indicate on your application under which your character falls. This dimorphism (male/female) should align with how your character will reproduce and is not a reflection on their identity or gender. We, the staff, recognize life is not as simple as this binary.

Characters may be of any age above 6 months old when they join. There are some benefits to older characters which are located in the skills section of the guidebook, any characters under six months of age will not be allowed unless born on site or obtained via perks by donation or advertising (please see extras page for information on this). We also allow characters to have accessories, which can be purchased with feathers from the shop. Please refer to the accessories page for more details.

Colors

free colors
The following colors are free to use as any base, mane, or marking colors. While we are not rigid on sticking to a hex, please be mindful of the colors you use and we ask that you try to stay visually close to these ranges, the same thing goes for the premium pelts. If a color falls outside of these ranges we will rope it to its nearest visual assigned coat. As for eye colors there are no limitations on eye colors or eye color mutations like heterochromia on the site, the only restrictions are to mutation specific colors (such as red for albinism).

purchasable colors
The colors listed below are premium colors and therefore must be purchased using feathers. To utilize them as a base coat pelt it will cost 400 feathers. To utilize them in a marking each color will cost 75 feathers (this includes markings such as "lighter undersides", if they contain a premium color it must be purchased, regardless of base coat). Once a marking color is purchased it can be used for any type of markings (even if they are different from one another) on that character. If multiple premium pelt colors are used on a character for markings, each separate colors will have to be purchased. Manes and eyes may utilize premium colors without needing to pay feathers.

Size

To mirror an element of reality Aesseldar does employ a dimorphic sizing system based around real life sizing differences between lions. Sizes on the site vary greatly, and each size will have different advantages or disadvantages when it comes to certain aspects of the site. Dwarf, Micro, and Goliath are only purchasable as mutations. While we stay rigid to the heights ranges marked here for the selected group, the weight is flexible. We do not care if you have a lion that is slightly heavier, or lighter, than what the categories listed here for each build have, however keep in mind that if the character is much thinner, or much heavier than the category puts them into they may start to suffer battle penalties.

Male Height
Goliath - 4'0 - 4'2
Large - 3'9 - 3'11
Medium - 3'6 - 3'8
Small - 3'3 - 3'5
Extra Small - 3'0 - 3'2
Micro - 2'9 - 2'11
Dwarf - 1'11 - 2'0
Male Weight
Goliath - 525 - 565lbs

Medium - 443 - 483lbs
Small - 402 - 442lbs
Extra Small - 361 - 401lbs
Micro - 320 - 360lbs
Dwarf - 279 - 319lbs
Female Height

Markings & Mutations

Characters may have as many or as few markings as they want, so long as the markings do not excessively clash in color (see above about problematic visuals) and are generally found on real animals, they are allowed. We welcome the use of real life photographs as references for markings. Any markings utilizing a premium color is subject to a small fee, but once purchased that color may be used in any number of markings on the character. Mutations come in two categories: Free, or premium. Premium mutations may be purchased with feathers, whereas free mutations have no limitations or requirements. If you do not see a mutation listed but think it should be added, please reach out via messages or discord for the suggestion, we love any feedback. Currently we allow the following mutations:

Free
  • Extra Long Fur
  • Curly Fur
  • Thin Fur
  • Hairless
  • Maned Females
  • Maneless Males
  • Bifurcated Tails
  • Melanism
  • Bob Tail
  • Blindness
  • *Elongated Claws
  • *Elongated Fangs
Premium - 200 Feathers Each
  • Polydactyly
  • Dwarfism
  • Microscopic
  • Goliath
  • Lynx Ears
  • Folded Ears
  • Leopard Tail
  • Vitiligo
  • Albinism
  • *Saber Fangs
  • *Small Horns

Some mutations do have restrictions or certain characteristics that cannot be changed. Microscopic lions are very proportionately small lions, whereas dwarf lions have small, stubby legs much like munchkin cats but are still full body size. Characters with vitiligo should start with relatively little of one color on their body, and it is expected that these areas grow and expand as they age. Polydactyly will have a higher chance of occuring randomly in incest-born litters (even if the cubs are custom staff will perform a roll). While we also allow small horns or bony protrusions from heads, see below for what isn't allowed. Further pros and cons on mutations will be most relevant to combat so please refer to the fighting page, mutations with * denote no advantage or disadvantage during battle.

Life Cycle

The life cycle of characters is to give you a general idea of how they age and mature in real life, we also allow to fluid time within the cub ranges so that they're more fun to play. We do not strictly adhere to this, but rather want to help give any ideas for character development if you need them!
0-6 Months

  • The cubs are just born! Eyes and ears are completely closed at this time. Speech is non-existence and should be nothing more then random sounds. Cubs spots should be easily visible at this point.
  • Around 10 days their eyes and ears will begin to open. Soon after they will begin attempts to walk around. They should still remain in the safety of the den only.
  • Milk teeth will begin to show around the 3 week point with canines coming in a week or so later.
  • Beginning at 1 month their speech should begin to develop further to form some sentences. Cubs may begin to venture just outside the safety of the den.
  • Solid foods may begin to be introduced around 2 months of age. Eye color may begin to change to their permanent color from their birth blue tone. May begin to venture out in to the pride land.
  • Near 4 months they begin to transition to solely solid food as mothers stop producing milk. May begin to learn simple skills. May be allowed outside of their pride lands. (Keep in mind there may be risks due to their age/vulnerability).
  • At 5 months they may begin to grow their 'adult' coats. Tail tufts begin to develop. Should still be under the care of a guardian or parent.

6-12 Months

  • Lions are more capable of survivability without a guardian or parent. May begin training from others.
  • At 6 months males begin to show signs of a mane at their throat or top of their head and nearing their 7th month of age begin to put on more weight and become 'stockier' than females.
  • 8 months their tail tufts are completely formed. Pride participation increases.

1-2 Years

  • Now considered a full member of the pride. Able to take and hold rank, including the leadership of a pride.
  • Males have more visible mane growth, but still lack the length and thickness of maturity. Some males may choose to leave their pride, while females can not with out permission.
  • Permanent canines replacements grow in. Become 3/4 of their adult weight, yet may reach their full height.

2-8 Years

  • Sexual maturity is reached and procreation may begin. Their full height and length have been reached.
  • Will continue to put on weight until near 4 years of age.
  • Manes will continue to grow and thicken until close to 5 years of age. Considered in their prime years.

8-14 Years

  • Are now reaching their older age. May begin to feel the effects of age.
  • Will begin to show signs of greying from age around 10 years of age. Are seen as 'elders'.
  • Senses will begin to dull. Movement will become slower and less agile. Accuracy lessens.
  • More prone to sickness.
  • Death from old age at 14 years of life.

New Member Bonus

If you are brand new to the site your first two characters will have some more creative liberties, not only as a thank you for joining but also to help you create a character that you love! You may create a character with any pelt color, including premium pelts, and they may have up to one premium color for markings. All other markings and base colors are limitless, if you wish to add additional premium marking colors they do need to be paid for. The only restriction is that the character cannot be under six months of age (unless you have donated or advertised to claim a reward). They may also have up to two premium mutations at no cost, with the exception of goliath. Our discord is also host to completely free designs (first character or not) and you may reference the pinned message in the free design channel for guidelines on how to claim a design.

Disallowed On Site

Currently there is a very small list of things that are not allowed on site. Anything not listed can be assumed not allowed, but always feel free to reach out to staff for confirmation.

  • Wings
  • Long Horns/Antlers
  • Curling Horns/Antlers
  • Magic

Creature Character Creation

Guidelines
Any creature character will be allowed to follow the rules of the creation page as if they were a lion. IE you may have them be unnatural colors, have markings, and even some mutations if you wish. If a lion has to pay for a color the creature must also pay for the color (unless it is otherwise a natural color on the animal IE greens and blues on birds). And while we are not requiring creatures to be 100% realistic we will have some specific restrictions on mutations. Mutations utilized must be biologically plausible for the species you are creating and must be a mutation we offer for lion creation. IE, albino may be used on all creatures as all creatures have color/pigment to be impacted but a bird may not have elongated fangs as birds do not have teeth to begin with nor may it have secondary wings as we do not offer a wing mutation for lions. If you have any specific questions about particular situations/mutations please let us know. Creatures must be approximately a realistic size for their species- we will allow some leeway on this especially if you are utilizing a size mutation. But we will not allow drastic variations like very tiny elephants the size of songbirds or vice versa.

Specializations

Creatures will be able to fully participate in the specialization system and all of its bonuses!

Dice Rolls

Creatures will have dice sets based on their approximate size (small, medium, large), however we will be restricting all creatures to starting dice sets lower than the values given to lions. We do want to remain a lion RP first and this is one of the few restrictions we will be placing on creatures to ensure they do not become overpowered.

Pride Membership

Creatures may join prides (they will count towards the pride cap/population) but cannot take over a leadership role within the pride. They may however serve as one of the lower ranks.
