Here, in the chest-pressing darkness, everything is simpler. It’s like the birth of the universe. An expanse of nothing with no sound, no sight, no touch. Everything is merely suspended. Neither love nor hate can touch us here. As we float in the endless ink stain that is this place.

But slowly, ever so slowly. They begin.

The cracks in the tunnels, the whoosh of wind. It’s like traveling back to the present, and so fast you get whiplash.

Mort blinks against the tepid rays of light, startled at the dripping from the roof of the caverns. Maybe he should go back, yes, perhaps he should. Back to the dark, endless baby universe. Where nothing really mattered.

And yet he stands there, remains still, or at least as still as a lion like Mort can be.

Why does everything look so different in the light?
