she followed the stars in the twilight sky and the dawn sun as it crested high above the clouds. she followed the rivers and creeks and fish upstream and the lizards and bugs under rockfalls and ledges. she followed and followed until her paws were raw and her stomach felt hollow, but the incessant drum of her heart and the thrill of the unknown kept her moving.

villanelle was particularly gloomy this evening, her head held low between her shoulders and her steps a sloppy shuffle of noise. the moon had begun to claim its place in the sky, easing up past sister sun as she begun her descent. the land was crumbling more and more with each step she took and the cat's nose wrinkled tightly in a sneeze as dust clouded around her. stones wedged between his toes and she winced uncomfortably at the sensation, but had little motivation to remove them as a thin drizzle started from above.

the scent of other lions was here, but stale, and villanelle rolled her eyes at the thought of coming face to face with any of the natives. the first thing she learned in her adventures was that not all were as welcoming as her kinfolk. just ahead, an overhang of rocks jutted out from one of the strange stone columns and villanelle dashed over to take shelter from the impending rain.

it was not ideal, but she had been in situations with far less during her travels. the wind lashed around her and before long, the rain was coming down in sheets, wide blue eyes gazing out as the water made tiny streams over the wastes.
