He understands little, truly, of what the man says. Childlike, a bird picking at tiny seeds on a long span of dusty road. But where the mind fails there is always instinct, that dark, icy clutch of phantom fingers as the other’s voice thunders in his ears. A warning. No matter how backwards he became…you can always count on the unkindness of strangers.

Mort stops in his tracks, hurt obviously, by the tempestuous look on his face. As if his eyes were the sun, blocked by heavy grey clouds. Why wasn’t this other lion as excited as he was? Why didn’t he want to be friends? All manner of creatures had friends. The soft, brown mice that scurried across the floor of his den at night. The crocodiles and the alligators. Even the birds, the noisiest, most annoying creatures, had a pal or two.

Was he truly lesser than a squawking, feathery lump?

He gave out a questioning chuff and stood there, vulnerable, the mud sliding down his legs.
