Of all the places he had anticipated to end up in a swamp was certainly not one of them. The dappled man was far from home and that had been his intentions for many years now, it had only just now come to fruition. He was ready to put the rumors behind him. Ready to move on from the rejection and judgment from others. He still held quite the low self-esteem, but then again growing up the way he had could do that to someone. He was wary of trusting others, of starting anew, but he wanted to at least try. A paw slipped, sinking down into murky mud and slime and he wrinkled his nose in disgust. This place was .. something, that was for sure. Lifting his now muddied paw from the muck he moved to try to find dryer ground, if that was even possible. For a moment the large man paused, purple gaze scanning the area. It was eerily quiet here, even for him.

Alysanne felt oddly reinvigorated. The trip from the beach head lead her straight through a desert, and though she could not hide the sour feelings that plagued her thoughts, ghosts of her past causing her to look over her shoulder with every few pawsteps, she couldn't deny the blissful familiarity of sand between her toes, of the craggy rock formations reaching like spindling fingers toward the everclear sky. But as she traversed the desert northward, the line dead trees began to sprout large green leaves, and the ground was no longer soft and dry. A river cut through her path, and as soon as Alysanne had crossed it, she was plunged into a swamp like none she'd seen before.

Unsteady and uncertain paws carried her through the tangled undergrowth, small enough to slip between the roots of trees that lurched well above her head. The tangle of vines that draped down around her were like spider webs threatening to entangle her, and the ground was uncertain, as if desperate to become a murky stillwater. Only the sound of frogs croaking and cicadas rustling accompanied her walk, but as she plunged deeper into the swamp, the silhouette of a lion took form against the murky horizon. “H-hello?” she called out hesitantly; where once she might have felt compelled to watch silently and curiously, Alysanne knew all too well now it was better to keep her distance. She had learned that lesson far too many times.

He was distracted with his conquest of finding somewhere dryer that he hadn't anticipated the company of another. Edgar preferred to be by himself, and even though he knew that others did not know him here the fear of rejection still remained in the forefront of his mind. 'H-hello?' A timid voice called out and he turned his head then, eyes moving until eventually they landed on the approaching lioness who had frozen almost just like he had. He cleared his throat then and briefly wondered if his voice would even work considering how long it had been since he had talked to another. "Hello." Hesitantly he swiveled his form around, unfortunately plopping both heavy front paws down in more muck. He wrinkled his nose out of distaste before raising his eyes upward to land upon the woman's face. "I .. I'm Edgar." He said hesitantly. Maybe if she knew his name she wouldn't be so afraid of him, or at least he hoped.

Here we go again, Alysanne, she uttered incoherently under her breath. How long had it been since she'd met a stranger, since she'd been bold enough to no longer avoid lionish scents, conversations muffled in the distance, potentially friendly caravans willingly passed along her travels? Alysanne had long grown scared of others, cautious of both the ones she barely knew and the ones she'd let get too close. She'd escaped death twice now, and she was certain he'd assuredly come and collect his dues. And yet, she could not deny her renewed sense of hope, her reuniting with Vermillion enough to reassure her that perhaps it was alright to give compulsion a second chance.

Hello, the pale man replied, inciting a swift twitch of her nose. He was far larger compared to her, but there was something about his demeanor that suggested something softer, there was not the same fire in his eyes as there often was in those who sought power and control. Alysanne's tense shoulders fell away, and her ears swiveled forward, abandoning caution in favor of a girlish curiosity. I .. I'm Edgar. She took a single step forward, but sympathetic of his potentially-flighty nature, she paused there to gauge his reaction. “I'm Alysanne,” she responded now, more confidently than she had been before. It had been her gentler of invitations that had borne the dearest of her friendships, after all, but it also had been that very same approach that had ruined her before.

“What a murky place, eh?” she smiled sweetly, lifting a lionish brow.

He stood, ankle deep, in the disgusting muck that surrounded him. His purple gaze was soft, hesitant as he stared at the girl only a few strides from him. 'I'm Alysanne. What a murky place, eh?' Conversation, this was good! Wasn't it? Or in the very least she didn't seem petrified of him which was reassuring to Edgar. "Yes, yes it certainly is Miss Alysanne." He paused for a moment, shifting his weight slightly but he didn't dare go closer to her as he did not want to frighten her. "Do you perhaps know of somewhere dryer? I'd prefer not to soak my paws in this muck all day." He mused with a small smile, just barely tugging the corners of his lips upward. He waited, patiently, and if she didn't well then perhaps they could find somewhere better together.
